All the education initiatives are implemented by our colleagues at the Korea Education Fund (KEF).

Education is highly valued in Korean culture and families often make significant sacrifice for their children’s education. Enrolment into good Middle Schools is highly competitive, the commitment to learning is impressive – try memorising a university text under a street lamp!

Sister School Relationships

Two sister school relationships have been developed over the last 3½ years between provincial middle schools and a church in New Zealand, and for the other, a school in Australia. Initiatives have included: art exchange, provision of stationery and classroom furniture, sports uniforms, home economics rooms, playground equipment, and workshops for English language teachers in pedagogy. Specific projects are now being developed to enhance the quality of education. Representatives from the partner schools typically visit the Korean school once or twice each year.

Teacher Exchange

A teacher exchange program was initiated in coordination with KEF for 2011. In the
pilot, a team of foreign teachers interacted with local teachers to assist raising
the quality of English language teaching at the sister schools, and more broadly.
The program focused on the quality of pedagogy and was integrated with the development
of a teacher resource kit. The first team of teachers visited Pyongyang in July 2011.
The second team is visiting in July 2012.

Teacher Resources

High quality teacher resources complement the teacher exchange programs. The goal is to enhance the quality of English language teaching at primary school level in Pyongyang and at the sister schools in the provinces. The first teaching  resource kit has been piloted, and KEF and the participating local teachers have given feedback on its design. Use of the kits was modelled during the teacher exchange program.

Orphans

Wonsan Primary School OrphanageWith our local partner, the Korea Education Fund, we have  been involved in a three year integrated plan to support orphanages in Wonsan, Kangwon Province. This program has already achieved striking results to address the basic physical needs of primary and middle school aged orphans. There has also been limited support of kindergarten and baby home orphans. A further three-year plan has been proposed and further orphanages in other locations suggested for assistance too. Our desire is to support the Koreans as they modernise their care of orphans and seek to improve the lives of the children.
