North Korea – Disabilities

All disability related initiatives are implemented by our colleagues at the Korean Federation for Protection of the Disabled (KFPD).

Wonsan work centre for people with Disabilities, Wonsan, North Korea

Providing the opportunity for people with disabilities to have meaningful employment the Wonsan work centre was established in 2007. In the local thinking, that person returns to being ‘a social person’ through becoming a worker. The people with disabilities working at the centre are highly motivated.

Activities at the work centre

Soap-making

Soap is critical to hygiene. Availability is scarce and quality can be low. People are highly innovative with how they produce soap today. This cottage scale pilot empowers people with disabilities and supplies orphans with soap.

Delivery vehicles

These motorised tricycles deliver goods around Wonsan. People can also catch a lift around town, akin to a taxi service.
